Alternative power revenue soarsGlobal revenue from the photovoltaics, wind and biofuels industry increased 50 percent last year, according to a just-released report.
Wind power was the biggest winner with a $50 billion share of the overall $115.9 billion in clean energy revenue, according to market research company Clean Edge Inc. Investors put $155.4 billion into new energy technologies, a 4.7 percent increase from 2007.
Clean Edge said a repeat performance of such a high level of growth in the renewable energy sector is unlikely this year.
Notable events last year included Brazil’s use of ethanol for more than 50 percent of its automobile transportation fuels and a record 27,000 megawatts of wind power installations. Photovoltaic installations reached more than 4 gigawatts globally.
Clean Edge predicts the three industries will grow to $325.1 billion in annual revenue within a decade.
